Vocabulary Instruction: A Review of Word Dynamo

Word Dynamo Increases Vocabulary for Every Level Learner

Word Dynamo on Dictionary.com has several awesome features

Overview

Word dynamo is a web based vocabulary development program which helps users of all levels by matching definitions with words.  Definitions are based on information in Dictionary.com.  While the company uses various sources such as The American Heritage Dictionary, and Harper Collins, the primary source of word related information comes from The Random House Dictionary  (Webster). Users can learn spelling, meanings, usage, synonyms, pronunciation, etymology, quote history, cultural variations, and sample sentences using Dictionary.com.  Word Dynamo uses information to create a multiple choice Word Power type quiz for lists of 6-15 words in each challenge.  Challenges can be browsed and are available in a variety of categories.

Review

I loved playing Word Dynamo, and was surprised to find my word knowledge is not what I expected it to be.  I object to a few of the words I missed, but overall, the experience highlights my need to continue studying vocabulary.  Love the format.  I can complete a challenge in a short time frame, making it a fantastic filler while waiting for an appointment, or making the most of "down time" during classroom transitions.  I am fairly new to the game, so I look forward to exploring more of the categories and building my vocabulary score.
